Microsoft Announces Student of the Month - Kevin Ballinas

As published on MSDN Blogs, May 26th, 2011:

As the month of May comes to a close, it is time to profile our sixth Microsoft Tech Student of the Month. We have chosen Kevin Ballinas, a computer science student in his junior year at Neumont University. Kevin has had the unique opportunity of attending a school that is one hundred percent focused on computer science education. As a result, Kevin has worked on a number of innovative and original technology projects over the course of his student career. These include Windows apps, Web apps, and even software that work in the cloud and on mobile devices!
Kevin’s interest in computer science began at a very young age. As a fourth grader, he took it upon himself to fix the broken computers in his classroom. He played around with each of the components, learned their functions, and applied that knowledge back to the repair process. This process of trial and error allowed Kevin to learn very quickly while getting hands on experience. He was able to download games onto the computers and soon enough they were up and running and accessible to the other students. After elementary school, Kevin moved to the suburbs and was exposed to rich technology programs where he got started in basic web programming. His interest in computer science flourished when he heard about software engineering from a teacher. In his sophomore year, he took a class that introduced him to the Java programming language. He familiarized himself with java further by taking two more Java-related courses as well as a web development course for more general training. Although Kevin had other interests such as architecture and cooking, his passion for technology stuck and ultimately drove his decision for where he wanted to go to college.
Kevin is now attending Neumont University, a project-based Bachelor’s program fully focused in computer science. It’s here that Kevin has really been able to explore his passion for programming at a much higher level. One of the first major projects he worked on was to create a Battleship game with a team of 4-5 people. The project tested the team’s knowledge in data transfer using TCP in Java, XML parsing, and building graphical user interfaces (GUIs). Some other projects involved creating a Monopoly-based game and an E-commerce site, both using Java.
After some of these early Java projects, Kevin and his teammates decided to leverage Microsoft technologies to create a Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) music player. This is no ordinary music player in that it automatically rates each song according to how quickly the user skips through it and uses that information to play songs the user will want to hear in the future based on the highest ratings. The music player is named “THInK” which was inspired by the letters in each teammate’s name: Tyler Garland, Jesus Rodriguez, Israel Campos and Kevin Ballinas. The team created the GUI for THInK using Expression Blend which students can download for free through theDreamspark Program.
The most recent project that Kevin completed at Neumont is a website called GradeMy<T> which is a take on Rate My Teacher. Kevin and his teammates Tyler Garland, Jorge Sanchez and Ruddy Arroliga built the web application using ASP.NET MVC. It is a completely user-driven website that users can use to rate anything they want. People create categories and specify any additional information that may be needed to identify each item in that category. For example, in the movie category there was a year and director tag associated with each film. The team took advantage of LINQ to select relevant items from such a large and complex database.
MainScreen_SongListCurrently, Kevin and some members of the original THInK team are getting back together to take their music player to the cloud. They have recruited some new teammates including Eban Korey Simon, Ruddy Arroliga, Jorge Sanchez, Nick Erickson and Cludio Salcido to help with the major revisions. The new music player will be called RETHINCK and will live in the cloud using Windows Azure so users can access their music anywhere while on the go. The plan is to create a Windows Phone 7 app and in-browser music player so users can access the software wherever they are. The team is going to create a WCF service that will be the connection between the applications and data. They are also implanting an achievement system through the IActionable API. The API makes it easy for developers to add a gamification component to their apps. It was founded by two Neumont alumni and they offered Kevin’s team the opportunity to use the technology for free. We’re hoping to see this really cool cloud music player released in the next year!
Kevin is expecting to graduate and receive his Computer Science Bachelor’s degree in June 2012. He is still sorting out his career plans but his dream is to work for Microsoft as a software developer working on ground breaking technologies. From every one of the Microsoft Tech Student team, we wish Kevin and his colleagues best of luck in building the RETHINCK music player and having a successful final year at Neumont University. We appreciate all his hard work and encourage him to follow the successful path he has taken thus far. Keep up the awesome work!

Announcements on Neumont University Student Housing Program

Neumont Student Housing, Pinnacle at South Towne
New Resident Assistants:

After a week of great interviews, the Neumont student housing team is proud to announce your new Resident Assistants: Greg Whelan and Armalene Cabreros. Neumont's Resident Assistants have a tough job: they mediate housing disputes, manage maintenance requests, drive the student shuttles, coordinate housing activities, and generally act as support staff for all the students living in Neumont's student housing program.

It's once again time to vote for Students of the Quarter.  Email Announcements@neumont.edu with any nominations.  Include the student’s name and why you believe they should be nominated.  A Student of the Quarter should be someone who has contributed to the school in a positive way: who has inspired you by overcoming some type of challenge, given up their time to help others, helped in some type of school or outside organization, or any other way that contributes to making Neumont and our community a better place.

Neumont student of the quarter Nominations are due by Friday, June 10th.

Upcoming Events:

Wednesday, June 1st, join us for a President’s fireside chat.  Curious about what’s happening at your University?  Do you have thoughts on how to improve your college experience?  Or, would you just like to learn more about the policies, procedures, and purpose behind the Neumont approach?  Join Neumont University President Ned Levine  for an open forum discussion on your school and current hot topics on campus.  The fireside chat will begin @ noon in Room 200.

Wednesday, June 1st, will be a free screening of the movie “Ahh!! Zombies.”  This zombie romantic comedy (you read that correctly) is brought to you by our friend Tom Carr and his Residual Haunting radio show.  Tom has acquired special permission to show this film on the Neumont University campus, which will be followed by a conversation with the director via Skype.  The film will begin at 6:30 pm in Room 300.

Saturday, June 4th will be our annual trip to Solitude Mountain Resort.  Students can hike, mountain bike or play Frisbee golf at the resort.  More information coming soon.

Take charge of the change you want to see at Neumont . . .

Have you ever heard the phrase " hollering in a cave?"  Sometimes people just want to vent, we get that, that's part of life.  But, when you really want to be heard, take your message to someone who can help your concept succeed.  Don't call out in a dark cave where nobody can hear you, when you can shout from the mountain tops!

At Neumont, when students, staff, or faculty have constructive ideas about their University experience, we want to hear about it.  Our students have great ideas, and unique perspective on the Neumont experience, and we appreciate the effective feedback out students provide during quarterly faculty and course evaluations.

Neumont is an institution that thrives on results, we test, we measure, and then we test again. And, one of the most compelling units of our success metric is the success and satisfaction of our students.

So, join us for a President's Fireside Chat, with Neumont University President Ned Levine to discuss your thoughts on how to improve the student experience, to review your Neumont student experience, or to ask your questions on what to expect over the coming months.  Or, just grab your lunch and meet in Room 200 to bask in the pseudo-fireside glow during an open forum conversation with Neumont's President.

Wednesday, June 1 - 12:00 pm, Room 200

Start the dialogue now, post your thoughts and questions below, see what others are wondering about. What would you like to see discussed?

College Investment Should Deliver a REAL Return

Yesterday, Pew Researchers announced that 57% of Americans say that the US Education system is not worth the money students spend. The researchers surveyed 2,142 adults 18 and older from March 15 - April 24, 2011. Participants answered several questions about the college experience, including: "Do you think students coming from public high schools into college, today, are better prepared or worse prepared or about the same as students 10 years ago?" Nearly six in 10 say they're not as well-prepared and only about 7 percent say they're better prepared.

This is a point Neumont has been striving to make for nearly a decade.  We believe that a University must focus on preparing students for the world they'll face after graduation.  And, this can't be done through a series of courses without relevant application to the world of work they're preparing to enter.

While some people have the luxury of pursuing a college education purely for the advancement of their knowledge.  That is not a privilege that most Americans enjoy; most people attend college to prepare themselves for a career.  As we've said a thousand times, what good is college if it doesn't deliver results?

College is a major investment in your future, and - as the Pew study states, many Americans are feeling disenchanted by the return they're getting for their educational dollars.  It was this very issue the US Department of Education was trying to address in 2006 when they released their study on US higher education which cited Neumont for leading the charge in innovation in education, with an approach designed around the needs of industry, and the needs of students to see a real, and dependable return on their tuition dollar.

"ROI - is what Neumont wants all of our graduates to measure their Neumont investment against.  It's why we take delivering a high quality professionally-focused education so seriously, while refusing to compromise on the necessary professional, technical, and academic competencies our Industry Partners are looking to hire." Neumont University President Ned Levine stated, when asked about the recent report.

So, this fall, while some students choose a college based on short-term convenience features (close to home, it's where friends are going, etc.) we feel that the students who choose Neumont will be making an unparalleled investment, with a proven history of delivering the type of results not many Universities can claim.

Is Neumont worth the investment?  Absolutely!  But, what do the alumnus think?  Share your thoughts on the Neumont investment

My Experience at Neumont

Hi!
My name is Kaiden and I'm a 7th quarter student here at Neumont. As a resident assistant for our housing program, & the secretary/treasurer for our Unified Student Government, I can definitely say that I know my school. So here's my exact and honest opinion on different aspect of the school:

Academics
Neumont's academics are really intense. You have to really be willing to put your best into your education. Thats not to say you wont have help. Neumont's faculty and staff are all freaking awesome! They really want you to succeed here and will do so much to help you reach that goal. We have free tutoring services, study tag events, and tons of other programs to help students do their best.

Students
It's no secret that we're not exactly mainstream here. We're all geeks and we like it that way. Theres an awesome culture of acceptance here because so many students like the things you like. This makes it really easy to make friends and find fun things to do.

Faculty
Like I said before, our faculty is so freaking awesome. We have some of the best professors here. They have real world experience and apply it in a great way to a classroom environment. You\'ll graduate with an in-depth understanding of a huge range of CS topics as well as an understanding of how these technologies are used in industry. Another really cool thing about the professors is how personable they are. Students are on first-name bases with every professor and professors know all their students by name. In no way is Neumont a school where you're simply a number sitting in a lecture hall with 100 other students.

The Locality (South Jordan, Utah)
It's true, South Jordan is not the most interesting place in the world. This has to be one of the least appealing aspects of Neumont. SoJo is a suburb about 15 minutes away from downtown Salt Lake City so its more business and family oriented. The good thing about that is that you definitely feel safe. Our Student Affairs Office along with our groups and orders sponsor a ton of programs so there's always cool stuff to do. We regularly go hiking, camping, to movie premiers like Tron: Legacy and Iron Man 2, and we hold events like Nerdi-gras to make life fun.

Overview
I'm being 100% honest when I say I have NEVER regretted my decision to come to Neumont. It's the perfect school for me. I love having classes where everything is related back to computers (i.e. Math classes where you write programs that solve the equations & algorithms you're learning about) I love having friends who appreciate technology and its creation as much as I do. Oh yeah, and it doesn't hurt that within a few months of graduating, we can expect a job paying, on average, $61,000.

What's in a name?

Many of you Neubies out there may not know this, but Neumont has a mascot - the Knights (decide for yourself whether it be Jedi or medieval).  But, have you ever seen the Neumont Knight? And, does anyone really care?  Probably not.  But why would they? Neumont doesn't have a football team with uniforms, or pep rallies with a goofy mascot doing back flips across the quad (you're welcome). . . . Come to think of it we don't have a quad either.  But, Neumontians do have school spirit, so what's up with the lack of enthusiasm for the mascot?

Well, first - why do school mascots even exist? According to a Penn State University Archivist, Jackie Esposito Representative"Mascots embody that desire to support your school and are a visual representation of what we believe to be the best parts of our school or organization."  In fact, some original college mascots were actually a sort of patriotic war time response: Historically, post-Civil War was when intercollegiate athletic games and rivalries emerged. Some mascots even trace their names to the war. For example, Illinois College’s teams are known as "The Blueboys" or "The Lady Blues," nicknames that began when many of the college’s students volunteered for the blue-uniformed Union army." Neumont has no shortage of war time service, we've proudly supported many Neubies who've deferred their academic pursuits to serve in our war efforts, and gladly welcomed them home at the end of their service, but the Neumont Knight wasn't chosen to represent their sacrifice, or unity of the school.

So, what other purpose does a mascot serve?  According to Wiki, mascots are often used for merchandising of school athletic teams, does the Nerf Federation count as an athletic team?  Would anybody buy a Knight emblazoned dart-coozie?  Ehhh, probably not.  Also according to Wiki "the word mascot has been traced back to a dialectic use in Provence and Gascony, where it described anything which brought luck to a household.3Certainly there are some Neumont students who could use a little luck during finals in the next couple of weeks, but I don't see anybody carrying around their lucky Knight figurine . . . or if they are, they have the self respect to keep it tucked into their backpack.

So what purpose would a Neumont mascot serve?

I suppose the basic answer is that it could be an informal uniting symbol of our university, and the spirit of our students.  But, if a mascot starts 'The Wave' in a forest and nobody's around to stand up, did it really happen?  Same goes for the Neumont Knight, or any school mascot -- if nobody feels that the mascot represents their student pride, what's the point?

So, to that end, there will be a Unified Student government meeting on Monday to discuss the Neumont mascot . . . the Knight's fate is far from certain, but what could be proposed in it's place?  A few thoughts:

The Neumont Bytes
The Neumont Noobs
The Neumont Spyders

What do you think?  Join in the conversation with other Neumont students to review potential Neumont mascot options and show your NU community pride.  Monday, Room 200 @ lunch.

Community Scholarship Opportunities

We just got word of a few public scholarships available.  Remember, looking for private scholarships should continue throughout your education.  Every year, there are thousands of public scholarships that go unclaimed due to lack of public interest.  Invest a couple of hours per week in looking for, and applying to, different scholarship programs and it could really pay off.

NOTE: Reputable scholarship programs do not require any payments or financial commitments from the applicant. If a scholarship program asks you to pay an application fee, it is a SHAM - talk to Neumont's Financial Aid Department for more information about different public scholarship programs.

Camping Trip - Crystal Hot Springs

We have a camping trip coming up on Saturday, May 14th, to Crystal Hot Springs near Brigham City, Utah.  Students may attend the camp out for $5.00 which covers food, transportation, and camping access fees.  Students are responsible for the cost of entrance into the hot springs, Download a discount coupon here: http://crystalhotsprings.net/offers/coupon.pdf.

About Crystal Hot Springs - nestled at the foot of Utah's Wasatch Mountains, Crystal Hot Springs is one of only two location sin the world that has both a hot and cold spring - less than 50 feet apart. These springs also have the highest mineral content of any hot springs in the United States and has been a favorite spot for campers and swimmers since 1901.

Many students do not have any camping supplies (especially sleeping bags.)  I’m posting this in hopes of rounding up some supplies so that more students may be able to attend this trip.  Please contact me if you would like to go or if you have sleeping bags or other camping equipment available for us to use.  Thank you.

Sincerely,

John  "JP" Peppinger

Wanted - Student Social Marketing Guru for PT Work

While this blog exists to help address spam content online about our University, and to share the positive message about the amazing things Neumont is doing, and the amazing accomplishments we've enjoyed in the past, a really strong Neumont Reviews Blog would be run by a current, or former Neumont student.

Ideally, this blog would feature content that compliments Neumont's Facebook efforts, the Neumont forums, and drive interesting dialog about our school, our courses, and the area businesses (how about a review of Espress Yourself coffee, or Cafe Mona Vie?)

The Neumont student reviews blogger must be a student or alumnus in good academic standing, with an interest in social marketing, and possessing strong written communication skills. We anticipate this position will take 2-5 hours per week and allow a great amount of autonomy.

For more information, or to apply to become the Neumont reviews blogger, email jobs@neumont.edu or check in with Stacy Cahoon Hughes on the third floor.

For other Neumont campus employment opportunities, visit the student employment section of Neumont's website at: www.neumont.edu/students/student_services.html
