Admission and Event Costs

In order to attend the event, it will cost you $2.00 at front door. This will allow you to participate at the “November 10th Nuemont Shindig”. Club sponsored events will cost you an additional $3.00 per event. Food will be free. We only take cash. Exact change is strongly advised.

Week One Announcements

WEEK ONE DONE

Join us this Friday, July 13^th, in the west parking lot from 5:00 to 6:15 pm.  There will be a taco cart serving free street tacos and drinks to celebrate the completion of the first week of Summer Quarter.  

If you have class at this time, check with your instructor to see if your entire class can take a break for a few minutes; students on a short break can go to the front of the line. 

BOOKS

If you ordered books through the Virtual Bookstore and had them shipped to Neumont, be sure to pick them up in the Student Store this week.

GYM MEMBERSHIPS AT MARV JENSEN

Neumont offers memberships to the Marv Jensen Recreation Center (about two miles away) in South Jordan at no cost to students.  If you’re interested, please stop by and pick up an application.  They are located just outside of Corrine’s office (Room 216).  Applications will be accepted by JP through THIS FRIDAY. 

New memberships will become active on July 20^th.  If you filled out an application in a previous quarter, you do not need to do so again (unless you left Neumont at some point or your membership was canceled due to lack of use).  

Neumont Zombie Outbreak, Coding Competition, and Trampoline Outing

This Saturday’s “Trail Of The Dead / Zombie Dash” will be postponed until next quarter’s Unplug & Play Festival.

CODING COMPETITION

Keep your mind clear for future zombie survival with our first student-run Coding Competition, presented by USG.  The competition will be in room 300 this Saturday from noon until 4 pm (no need to sign up in advance).  As is true with zombie survival, bigger teams are better.  Survive in this competition as a solo player or with teams up to three people.  Pizza and soft drinks will be provided.  Contact Kenneth Lin for any questions about the competition. klin@student.neumont.edu

JUMP ON IT

With the Zombie outbreak on hold for now, celebrate with us after the Coding Competition as we jump for joy at the “Jump On It” trampoline center.  This jumping center has 10,000 sq. ft. of trampolines and inflatable fun. $8 to jump for 1 hour and $5 for a second hour of jumping.   A free shuttle will leave Four Seasons Clubhouse at 6pm on Saturday.  Please sign up with JP to secure your spot on the shuttle.

Neumont's Got Talent 3.0

Neumont’s Got Talent 3.0 will take place Friday, March 8th, at noon in room 300. All those attending will cast their vote for our show’s winner. Bring your lunch; we’ll provide dessert and drinks.  We'll have opera singers, dancers, comics, and more.

Neumont Haunts

Neumont University is centered in South Jordan, Utah and a short trip to the greater Salt Lake City is nothing but a short Trax ride away. If scarring yourself silly is what you are into then boy does Salt Lake tend to your needs. There are at least 4 different haunted houses and many other October events offered here in Salt Lake. Everything from the corn mazes to the witch festival. There are events for every level of scary that you should so choose.

The great thing about Neumont being in this location is the variety of places you can visit. If you want outdoors you can go to the mazes and enjoy a great fright or just get lost for once and let all of your worries disappear. The local theme park known as the Lagoon hosts a month long event called frightmares where the entire park is transformed into a scary thrill adventure. The local malls offer trick or treating as a safe environment for children to have Halloween the way they want. Many small frightful activities are offered around the valley and the way you spend your month here in South Jordan is all up to you and how much you decide you would like to be scarred.

The New Writing Lab

Neumont would like to offer a new writing lab here at school and it will be offered everyday from 12-2 and is being run by KP(Kristen Parker) She would also like for any students who have been here for at least one quarter to take a small English survey. The following email describes this in further detail.

My name is Kristen Parker and I'm a new English instructor here at Neumont. I am starting a new Writing Center, and I'd like a minute of your time in order to make this service as useful for you as possible. The Writing Center will open on October 17th. It will be open from 12-2 p.m. each day and is located in room 306 (the library). If you would like any help with writing projects of any kind (including help with grammar, style, content, and organization) please be sure to come to the Writing Center with not only your draft, but an assignment handout or rubric (grading sheet for the writing project) as well. This will allow me to better serve you.

Welcome Neubies

Thinking back to the days when I was a neubie, (Which was only one short quarter ago) I realize that things happened to be a lot tougher than I thought they would be. I struggled at first to keep up with the pace of things and I started to lose sleep due to procrastination. Well I turned my act around and was able to get myself on track and passed all of my classes like a champ. The purpose of this article is to actually inform all incoming students of the dangers that surround procrastination. It is the most volatile of the bad habits that college students seem to show during these few short years that we have together.

First things first, I would suggest doing all work the moment it is given to you. Work and it as much as you can but do not lose sleep over it. Here at Neumont sleep is a very important thing to students because if you start to lose it you begin to fall asleep during class and not keep up with what needs to be kept up with. Time management is important as well due to it encompassing all of the previous topics I have covered. All in all I would say that it is important to keep track of all of these topics and keep control on what you do and when. Do your work but sleep when you can, and play games to relive stress but do not focus on them to the point that your grades fall. A slogan here at Neumont is GB4G which stands for “Grades before Games” and if you live by this you will succeed here at Neumont.

Maintain your body and your time. A lot of students find themselves eating less healthy and resorting to junk food and mass amounts of caffeine. This is not a good habit to get into due to its effect on one’s health. Eventually it will cause you to not have as much energy and your physical properties will begin to lack and expand. I would say the most important part of eating healthy is what all of our parents have told us and that is to eat our vegetables and eat balanced meals. It sounds like a lecture but it is extremely important to follow if you want to stay healthy and not end up being that troll under the bridge who is a code monkey.

If you follow all advice given in this article and use common sense while attending this fine institution of learning then you will succeed and end up graduating in 2.5 years with a diploma that means around 60k a year depending on who hires you. Neumont is known for great coders and good leaders, so wouldn’t you want to be part of the legacy that Neumont is creating. While attending just remember to eat right, do not procrastinate, and manage your time effectively. Personally I have yet to grasp all of these 100% but since I am on my way to getting these skills to that point then I will one day graduate and be able to look back with pride. As a student that has already experienced Neumont for its level of hard work and dedication I openly welcome you to Neumont as new students on their way to a better future.

If you’re interested, please stop by and pick up an application.  They are located just outside of JP’s office (Room 216).  You can add family members or upgrade to an all-county pass for an additional expense (paid directly to Marv Jensen).   Applications will be accepted through THIS FRIDAY.  Completed applications should be submitted to JP. 

Memberships activate on July 29^th.  If you filled out an application in a previous quarter, you do not need to do so again (unless you left Neumont at some point).  Members who rarely use (or haven’t used it at all) will be asked to confirm that they want the membership to continue.

FOOD

New: Gustavo’s is now selling breakfast Monday and Wednesday mornings from 7:30-9:00 a.m.

Bryce’s serves lunch Monday-Thursday from 11:30 – 12:30.  Gustavo’s serves lunch the first three Fridays of every month during that same time period.  Student organizations offer lunch on the fourth Friday of every month as a fundraising opportunity.  You can purchase Gustavo’s Bucks, Neumont Bucks (good for student organization lunches), and Bryce Bucks in the Student Store.  They can be charged to your student account through July 29^th.

E-LIBRARY

This is a reminder that we have a variety of online databases that collectively comprise our library.  These resources are available 24-hours a day from any location with an internet connection.  USE THEM!   Questions?  Contact Lori Draper. Contact student affairs for the login information.

COURSE CATALOG

The Neumont University Course Catalog is available on the Download Important Documents Center (Neumont website).  Students are strongly encouraged to read the Catalog and familiarize themselves with program requirements and school policies.  If you have questions about the Catalog, contact Larry Crandall or Erin McCormack.

SPORTS EQUIPMENT

There is sports equipment available for students to borrow.  To checkout a volleyball, basketball, football, soccer ball, Frisbee, or ping pong paddles, go to the bookstore (Monday-Friday—7:00-7:55 a.m., 12:00-12:30 p.m., 5:00-10:00 p.m.; Saturday—9:00-1:00).

STUDENT STORE

HOURS - The Student Store (just off the second floor lobby) is open Monday through Friday from 7:00-7:55 a.m., 12:00-12:30 p.m., and 5:00-10:00 p.m.

BUILDING HOURS

The Neumont building is open during the quarter from 7:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on Saturdays.

Coding Competition

When: This Friday, June 10^th.  

The competition starts at 8:00 am and lasts until noon.  Light breakfast and lunch will be served.  Students will not have regularly scheduled morning classes.  Classes resume at 1pm on Friday.

Liberty Park Picnic

Sign-up on JP’s door for a Saturday trip to Liberty Park.  We will have a picnic, beach volleyball, bocce and croquet.  The featured event of the day will be “ice blocking” down Liberty Park Hill.  “Ice blocking” involves sliding down a hill while sitting on a big block of ice (if you didn’t know already.) 

Pre-Finals Breakfast, presented by USG

The finals “Breakfast for Dinner” will be next Friday, June 17^th.  This free dinner will be served at 6:00 pm to Neumont students.  The dinner is provided by contributions from USG, Student Affairs and our University President, Ned Levine.  If you are interested in helping out, please contact Glen Watson at gwatson@student.neumont.edu

Commencement Ceremony (aka “graduation ceremony”)

Support your friends/classmates, listen to an Oracle powerbroker speak, eat tasty desserts… hang out with the undead.  Details are on the Neumont website and on the Kilbourn-original posters around the building.  The event is located close to the University (of Utah) TRAX line; Neumont will provide rides to the Sandy TRAX station and tickets.  Sign up on JP’s door.

Camping Trip - Crystal Hot Springs

We have a camping trip coming up on Saturday, May 14^th, to Crystal Hot Springs near Brigham City, Utah.  Students may attend the camp out for $5.00 which covers food, transportation, and camping access fees.  Students are responsible for the cost of entrance into the hot springs, Download a discount coupon here: http://crystalhotsprings.net/offers/coupon.pdf.

About Crystal Hot Springs - nestled at the foot of Utah's Wasatch Mountains, Crystal Hot Springs is one of only two location sin the world that has both a hot and cold spring - less than 50 feet apart. These springs also have the highest mineral content of any hot springs in the United States and has been a favorite spot for campers and swimmers since 1901.

Many students do not have any camping supplies (especially sleeping bags.)  I’m posting this in hopes of rounding up some supplies so that more students may be able to attend this trip.  Please contact me if you would like to go or if you have sleeping bags or other camping equipment available for us to use.  Thank you.
