Thanksgiving at Neumont

The Thanksgiving holiday is rapidly approaching.  A few people will be heading home or can travel locally but, for the most part, we will all be here as a Neumont family.  We want to make the environment during the holidays as comfortable and homey as possible.

To provide Neumonters with the best holiday, Neumont will once again provide a Thanksgiving dinner to its students.  Yes, you heard that correctly.  Neumont University will be providing students with a classic Thanksgiving meal.  

Thanksgiving will be held at the Neumont campus on Thursday, November 24^th  at 6:00 pm.  We'll be serving: turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, vegetables, pies, and more. 

Bring your pillow and your favorite movie or game to share with other students.  Set up a mini LAN party with your roommates and friends.  Gaming, movies, NERF and game room activities are all encouraged.  We would also like to incorporate any traditions that your family or friends might do at home during our Neumont Thanksgiving event.  If you have any ideas, please contact JP or Corrine.

Microsoft Challenge you Could Win 25 Thousand Dollars

Microsoft is holding yet another of their Imagine Cup competitions this year. This year they have three categories to compete in. The categories are as follows: Software Development, Game Design, and an IT Challenge. There is a reward of 25 thousand dollars and participation is open to anyone who would like to dip their hands in this wonderful opportunity. Microsoft’s Imagine Cup competition is one of the world’s largest student technology competitions, and while the dust is still settling from last July’s record-breaking World Finals in New York, I am happy to announce that the 2012 United States Imagine Cup competition has started and is bigger and better than ever. In 2012 the US is hosting its own Software Design, Game Design, and IT Challenge competitions in Redmond, WA, and the World Finals will be held in Sydney, Australia. In addition to travel, prize money, great PR, and a life-changing experience for your students, we have expanded the $25,000 departmental team sponsor prize to include both Software Design and Game Design (more details below) winners.

Some of last year’s finalists developed solutions that helped partially-blind students take notes in class, screen blood samples for malaria using a mobile phone, and help students with asthma manage their symptoms by playing a video game that requires breathing through a special tube. Some projects were developed just for the competition and others were developed for research or to fill a course requirement and then were entered as a secondary objective. Many of our winners were undergraduate students, but a couple great projects came from graduate research and labs.

The United States runs two Imagine Cup competitions per year to better align with the academic calendar; one in the Fall and one in the Spring. The Fall competition historically has about the half as many competitors than the Spring competition, and finalists are chosen from both so there is a big advantage for competing in the Fall. Fall finalists are announced by the end of November, so teams that are selected in Fall get about 4 months to polish their projects. Spring winners are announced in March and will have less than 6 weeks to polish and complete their projects, so the advantages of competing in Fall are almost overwhelming if you can get your team formed and plans submitted by the Fall Round One deadline of October 14th. Teams that are not selected as finalists in the Fall are allowed (and encouraged) to keep working on their projects, incorporate judging feedback and resubmit them in the Spring.

As you can see it is easy to get started. The good news is that Round One for Software Design and Game Design is a project milestone date and is not judged. You can literally form a team, write a storyboard or business plan draft and submit an entry in under an hour. Your Round One entry shows your intent and automatically advances your team to Round Two. For the IT Challenge, you can take the tests as often as you like; score above 15 and you automatically advance to the next round.

The Software Design and Game Design competitions are team competitions; students can form teams of up to four students plus a faculty mentor. The IT Challenge is an individual competition that aligns with Microsoft’s IT Certifications.

The Rewards

Ten Software Design, Twenty Game Design (ten in each category) and Ten IT Challenge Competitors will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the Imagine Cup US finals in April 2012 at the Microsoft Redmond Campus. First, Second and Third place teams will receive cash prizes. The winner of the US Software Design competition also will represent the US at the Imagine Cup World Finals at Sydney, Australia in July 2012. Mentors in Software Design and Game Design are also given paid travel to support their teams.

Imagine Cup competitors also get invaluable experience that is highly valued by recruiters. Many Imagine Cup competitors get interviews and job offers from Microsoft. Even if a student team doesn’t get selected as a finalist, they can add their experience to their resumes and may qualify for honorable mention, which can add important differentiation in today’s challenging job market.

Last year the first-place team in the Software Design category not only won a cash prize for the team members, they also won a $25,000 prize for their mentor’s department. This year, we are expanding the departmental sponsor grant award to include both Software Design and Game Design winners.

Besides the resources listed on the Imagine Cup web page, your school may qualify for an on-campus Imagine Cup workshop. Microsoft has fielded a team of regional developer evangelists that can come to campus, explain the details of the competition, and walk interested students through the sign-up, brainstorming, team formation, and business plan/storyboard submission; from zero to Round One in less than two hours. Interested in using Windows 7, Kinect, or Windows 8? Your school may also qualify for a technical jump-start workshop to get you from plan to code as quickly as possible.

10:00 AM – Theme Announcement and Game Idea Pitches, the contest theme is announced and participants pitch their ideas for games using the theme

11:00 AM – Team Organization, participants break into teams to work on the game ideas they like best

12:00 PM – Teams Start, the game making frenzy begins!  Work continues until 9:00 PM that night.

Saturday October 15, 2010

12:00 PM – Teams Stop, hours of hard work come to an end, teams hand in their games along with screenshots or video

Project Showcase Call for Entries

Calling all students! Neumont's Fall Project Showcase is coming up, fast. Project Showcase is an excellent opportunity to let everybody else see what you've been working on, compete for cool prizes, and enjoy a little friendly competition. So, here are the details:

When: Friday, September 16, 2011, from 2:00 - 4:00 pm; Project classes have mandatory attendance for project showcase instead of in-class work.

Where: Room 200

Why: 'Cause you've been working hard all quarter; now show off what you've done.  Check with your instructors to see if your Project Showcase entry counts for extra credit.

Who:  The Showcase is open to all students, and prizes will be awarded according to the course level of the course for which the project was completed, or in the independent project category. You may enter an individual or group project that was done in class, or on your own – just get a faculty sponsor to sign off on the project.  Class-assigned projects that go above and beyond are eligible for entry. Friends and family are welcome to attend the showcase to view your projects – and they’ll get to judge the entries too.

How:  Submit a Project Showcase Intent to Participate Form to the reception desk on floor 3, signed by a faculty sponsor.

Compete In Showcase

To demonstrate project quality and readiness for Project Showcase, you will be required to show your faculty sponsor:

• A two-minute plain-language elevator explanation “pitch” of the project.
• A two-minute demonstration of the project
• A completed Intent to Participate Form
• If you are submitting more than one project, you must demonstrate coverage for each project (A "pitch" person who will cover the table. All booths must be staffed at all times.)

Showcase Format
The Showcase will be held in a "science-fair" like setting.  Spectators will cast ballots for their favorite project in each category. 

Competitors are judged on:

• Each project will be given a technical score by the Project Showcase judging committee comprised of faculty, students, and alumni; this score serves as a base added to the total votes cast for a project.
• Their two-minute “pitch.” The pitch should show the student's (or team’s) professionalism, technical expertise, business acumen, and/or entrepreneurial spirit.
• A two-minute demonstration of the project. All required equipment must be provided by the student.
• Students will have two tables for displaying their project.  Competitors are encouraged to be creative in their project display.
• If the presentation requires a white board or any supplemental "real estate," please note it on your Intent to Participate Form.

Nerd is the New Cool at Neumont University, Utah’s Very Own Geek U

The students at Neumont University, in South Jordan, Utah are all about geek, and at Utah’s Neumont University, getting a geek degree comes with its own form of social life. Over 200 students from the college, and local community, will gather at Neumont for Nerdapalooza – an 18 hour gaming fest that promotes Neumont’s very unique culture. 

“Neumont is the ideal school for those who are passionate about technology; we’re TechTopia! Our students aren’t really interested in the typical college social scene. They love the digital world, and when we have parties on campus they tend to revolve around all things tech.”  John Peppinger, Neumont’s Student Life Coordinator explained of the upcoming event.  “Plus, when we host events that revolve around gaming, computers, zombies, or Nerf – our students, and Utah’s local geek community come out to be a part of the fun – both analog and digital.”

Neumont University, offers accelerated Bachelor’s degrees with a focus on software, web, and game development as well as technology management.  Students enrolled in this intensive program attend classes five days per week, eight hours per day, for two and a half years and graduate into a growing field with hot career opportunities.  But, while on campus they also like to have a little fun … and at this school, which was dubbed by MSNBC as ‘Geek U’ in 2006, fun resolves around all things tech – gaming, social networks, computers, and more computers. It's August and that means Fall Project Showcase is just around the corner, check out this video from our past Project Showcase to get a feel for the event. 

What is Project Showcase?

Neumont University is TechTopia, a haven for the technologically savvy — and Project Showcase, the Neumont student review, held each year in Spring and Fall is the perfect place to get a glimpse of what that really means. 

Project Showcase is an excellent chance to tour the campus, meet current students, and find out more about life and learning at Neumont University -- walk through rows of student projects completed in student's 1st - 10th quarters, you can even check out some of the Enterprise Projects that haven't yet been released to the public.  And of course, at the end of it all, there's a massive LAN party in our new Gaming Chamber.

GYM MEMBERSHIPS AT MARV JENSEN

Did you know, Neumont offers memberships to the Marv Jensen Recreation Center at 10300 S. Redwood Road in South Jordan at no cost to students and staff? If you’re interested, please stop by and pick up an application.  They are located just outside of JP’s office (Room 216).  You can add family members or upgrade to an all-county pass for an additional expense (paid directly to Marv Jensen).   Applications will be accepted through THIS FRIDAY.  Completed applications should be submitted to JP. 

Memberships activate on July 29^th.  If you filled out an application in a previous quarter, you do not need to do so again (unless you left Neumont at some point).  Members who rarely use (or haven’t used it at all) will be asked to confirm that they want the membership to continue.

New: Gustavo’s is now selling breakfast Monday and Wednesday mornings from 7:30-9:00 a.m.

Bryce’s serves lunch Monday-Thursday from 11:30 – 12:30.  Gustavo’s serves lunch the first three Fridays of every month during that same time period.  Student organizations offer lunch on the fourth Friday of every month as a fundraising opportunity.  You can purchase Gustavo’s Bucks, Neumont Bucks (good for student organization lunches), and Bryce Bucks in the Student Store.  They can be charged to your student account through July 29^th.

E-LIBRARY

This is a reminder that we have a variety of online databases that collectively comprise our library.  These resources are available 24-hours a day from any location with an internet connection.  USE THEM!   Questions?  Contact Lori Draper. Contact student affairs for the login information.

COURSE CATALOG

The Neumont University Course Catalog is available on the Download Important Documents Center (Neumont website).  Students are strongly encouraged to read the Catalog and familiarize themselves with program requirements and school policies.  If you have questions about the Catalog, contact Larry Crandall or Erin McCormack.

SPORTS EQUIPMENT

There is sports equipment available for students to borrow.  To checkout a volleyball, basketball, football, soccer ball, Frisbee, or ping pong paddles, go to the bookstore (Monday-Friday—7:00-7:55 a.m., 12:00-12:30 p.m., 5:00-10:00 p.m.; Saturday—9:00-1:00).

After a week of great interviews, the Neumont student housing team is proud to announce your new Resident Assistants: Greg Whelan and Armalene Cabreros. Neumont's Resident Assistants have a tough job: they mediate housing disputes, manage maintenance requests, drive the student shuttles, coordinate housing activities, and generally act as support staff for all the students living in Neumont's student housing program.

It's once again time to vote for Students of the Quarter.  Email Announcements@neumont.edu with any nominations.  Include the student’s name and why you believe they should be nominated.  A Student of the Quarter should be someone who has contributed to the school in a positive way: who has inspired you by overcoming some type of challenge, given up their time to help others, helped in some type of school or outside organization, or any other way that contributes to making Neumont and our community a better place.  

Neumont student of the quarter Nominations are due by Friday, June 10^th.

Wednesday, June 1^st, join us for a President’s fireside chat.  Curious about what’s happening at your University?  Do you have thoughts on how to improve your college experience?  Or, would you just like to learn more about the policies, procedures, and purpose behind the Neumont approach?  Join Neumont University President Ned Levine  for an open forum discussion on your school and current hot topics on campus.  The fireside chat will begin @ noon in Room 200.

Wednesday, June 1^st, will be a free screening of the movie “Ahh!! Zombies.”  This zombie romantic comedy (you read that correctly) is brought to you by our friend Tom Carr and his Residual Haunting radio show.  Tom has acquired special permission to show this film on the Neumont University campus, which will be followed by a conversation with the director via Skype.  The film will begin at 6:30 pm in Room 300.

Saturday, June 4^th will be our annual trip to Solitude Mountain Resort.  Students can hike, mountain bike or play Frisbee golf at the resort.  More information coming soon.
