Neumont University faculty, Jamie King, contributed to a University of Utah grad program video game which has become a national hit!

SALT LAKE CITY – Graduate students from the University of Utah have gained attention for developing a popular survivor-horror video game. 

Students in the Entertainment Arts and Engineering Master Games Studio (EAE MGS) created “Erie,” a survivor-horror game that has already gathered more than 700,000 hits on YouTube thanks to game commentators and other reviewers and more than 10,000 players in its first few days.

The students developed “Erie” using interactive design, which allowed them to constantly experiment with scare tactics and the psychology of fear. "We all sat down and we came up with all these ideas. The first concept we came up with was that you’re trapped in a maze underneath a city with the monster in there and you have to figure your way out,” said Christopher Diller, level and sound designer. Players have to gather clues, collect dead cats and use spray paint to mark their trail. “Here we allow people to free draw anything they want; use your imagination,” said Ryan Bown, art lead. “So it’s just another fun thing that adds to it. It’s a good balance of spoofs and scares but also to have some fun.”

Students spent several hours every week for the last year and a half developing the game. They say it was definitely worth it.“When the game went out, I was excited that some people were going to play it. I didn’t realize we were going to have this much attention. To have over a million views on YouTube. That’s been very exciting to see people get scared at things,” said Jamie King, engineer, and senior faculty at Neumont University who participated in building the game while earning his master's degree.

Another study found that only one-third of Americans feel that their opinions matter to government. What can we do to change this? Technology creates new opportunities to engage people to solve problems, but no platforms have emerged that effectively engage citizens and meet the needs of government and other stakeholders. DemocracyLab is a nonprofit organization creating online tools to help people identify problems, construct solutions, make decisions, and take collaborative action.

Project Showcase - September 14th

Project Showcase is an excellent opportunity for you to show off projects, compete for awesome prizes, and get involved in a little friendly competition.  It’s time to submit your Intent to Participate Form to the reception desk on floor three.

Event Details 

• When:  Friday, September 14, 2012, from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm - Project classes have mandatory attendance for Project Showcase instead of in-class work.  Enterprise Projects students are required to participate and must submit an Intent to Participate Form signed by Charlotte Westphal (University Relations). 
• Where:  Room 200         
• Who:  The Showcase is open to all students, and prizes will be awarded in 100-Level, 200-Level, 300-Level, Independent, and Enterprise Project categories.  You may enter an individual or group project that was done in class or on your own – just get a faculty sponsor to sign off on your project.  Class-assigned projects that go above and beyond may be entered.  Friends, Family, Alumni, and Neumont Industry Partners are all welcome to attend Project Showcase. 
• How:  Submit a Project Showcase Intent to Participate Form, signed by a faculty sponsor, by Friday, September 7^th, to the reception desk on floor three.

Survey Says: Utah Really is a Pretty Great State!

Utahns who believe the state is a great place to live can rest easy when they think about the future.

The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index has ranked Utah as the state that will be the best place to live in the future.

"Utah does best in part because it is among the top two best-performing states for low smoking habits, ease of finding clean and safe water, having supervisors who treat workers like a partner rather than a boss, learning something new or interesting on any given day, and perceptions that your city or area are "getting better" rather than "getting worse," the survey said.

Gov. Gary Herbert, in a statement announcing the results of the survey, said such results continue to prove that Utah really is the best state in the nation now, and is well positioned for long-term success.

The report looked at roughly 18 months of data taken from 530,000 interviews with adults in the U.S. in 2011 and 2012.

Utah was ranked among the top 10 in 11 of 13 categories, including economic confidence, job creation and an improving standard of living. In five of those categories, Utah was ranked in the top two and its strong showing placed it well ahead of Minnesota at No. 2, Colorado No. 3, Nebraska at No. 4 and North Dakota at No. 5.
