University Venture Fund Information Session on Neumont Campus

University Venture Fund will be holding an information session next Wednesday, September 7^th, at noon in room 200. All interested students are invited to attend. 

The University Venture Fund (UVF) is the largest student-run venture capital fund in the world, with over $18 million under management. Similarly to Neumont's  approach to learning, student interns at UVF get hands-on experience analyzing companies, meeting with other investors and entrepreneurs, and making real investments in some of the best start-up companies in the country. To date, UVF students made 23 investments, including a few notable Utah companies like Omniture and Instructure. 

If you want to learn what it takes to raise venture financing for your future business or just learn from some of the best technology entrepreneurs and investors in the country, then please join us for our information session September 7th. Neumont Course Registration for Computer Science and Technology Management Programs

Registration for Fall Quarter ‘11 opens Tuesday, September 6^th.  This e-mail includes the information you’ll need in order to make the best registration choices for next quarter, and the duration of your time at Neumont. 

  

General Guidelines

·         Please refer to the Fall Quarter Course Schedule for details on specific courses, such as class meeting times and sprint.

·         Students are STRONGLY advised to take the recommended schedule for their cohort exactly as listed on the course schedule—nothing more, nothing less.  If you have questions about that schedule or have failed classes, consult the expert: Alice Nguyen.  (While your friends mean well, they are not registration experts and taking a class out of turn could have serious, negative consequences on your progress towards graduation or your eligibility for financial aid.)

·         If your courses have multiple sections (A, B, C), please make sure to register for matching sections.  That is, all of your courses should be A, or B, or C. 

·         On-line registration closes Monday, October 3, at which time Late Registration fees will be in effect. 

·         As always, academic advising is available to all students.  If you would like to talk about your Fall Quarter schedule or your progress toward graduation, simply schedule an appointment with Alice by adding your name to the appointment sheets on her office door.

Registration Schedule

Based on the number of credits you have earned by the end of Summer Quarter 2011, Sprint 1, your registration window opens at the following time:

• Tuesday, September 6, 7:00 AM,  135+ credits earned
• Wednesday, September 7, ,7:00 AM, 90+ credits earned
• Thursday,  September 8, 7:00 AM, 45+ credits earned
• Friday,  September 9,  7:00 AM, All others

Project Course Registration

If you register for a course with a project component (such as CSC160) you will automatically be registered for the appropriate project course. If you are in your final quarters of Enterprise Projects, you will automatically be registered for Marketing Your Personal Brand.

Progress toward Graduation

Cohorts 23 – 25, check your Degree Progress Audit for courses needed to graduate. 

All Cohorts before Cohort 23, check with Alice Nguyen on your courses needed to graduate (or Larry Crandall if you have one or two quarters before graduation).

Project Showcase Call for Entries

Calling all students! Neumont's Fall Project Showcase is coming up, fast. Project Showcase is an excellent opportunity to let everybody else see what you've been working on, compete for cool prizes, and enjoy a little friendly competition. So, here are the details:

When: Friday, September 16, 2011, from 2:00 - 4:00 pm; Project classes have mandatory attendance for project showcase instead of in-class work.

Where: Room 200

Why: 'Cause you've been working hard all quarter; now show off what you've done.  Check with your instructors to see if your Project Showcase entry counts for extra credit.

Who:  The Showcase is open to all students, and prizes will be awarded according to the course level of the course for which the project was completed, or in the independent project category. You may enter an individual or group project that was done in class, or on your own – just get a faculty sponsor to sign off on the project.  Class-assigned projects that go above and beyond are eligible for entry. Friends and family are welcome to attend the showcase to view your projects – and they’ll get to judge the entries too.

Project Showcase categories include:

• Independent Projects
• 100 Level Course Projects
• 200+ Level Courses Projects
• Enterprise Projects
• Overall Favorite

How:  Submit a Project Showcase Intent to Participate Form to the reception desk on floor 3, signed by a faculty sponsor.

Compete In Showcase

To demonstrate project quality and readiness for Project Showcase, you will be required to show your faculty sponsor:

• A two-minute plain-language elevator explanation “pitch” of the project.
• A two-minute demonstration of the project
• A completed Intent to Participate Form
• If you are submitting more than one project, you must demonstrate coverage for each project (A "pitch" person who will cover the table. All booths must be staffed at all times.)

Showcase Format
The Showcase will be held in a "science-fair" like setting.  Spectators will cast ballots for their favorite project in each category. 

Competitors are judged on:

• Each project will be given a technical score by the Project Showcase judging committee comprised of faculty, students, and alumni; this score serves as a base added to the total votes cast for a project.
• Their two-minute “pitch.” The pitch should show the student's (or team’s) professionalism, technical expertise, business acumen, and/or entrepreneurial spirit.
• A two-minute demonstration of the project. All required equipment must be provided by the student.
• Students will have two tables for displaying their project.  Competitors are encouraged to be creative in their project display.
• If the presentation requires a white board or any supplemental "real estate," please note it on your Intent to Participate Form.

Awards

Neumont swag, Best Buy gift cards, bragging rights, and the coveted Dale Hull Award of Excellence (okay, so it isn't exactly coveted 'cause you've never seen it; but what good are bragging rights without a big, gaudy trophy to decorate your apartment?)

Nerd is the New Cool at Neumont University, Utah’s Very Own Geek U

The students at Neumont University, in South Jordan, Utah are all about geek, and at Utah’s Neumont University, getting a geek degree comes with its own form of social life. Over 200 students from the college, and local community, will gather at Neumont for Nerdapalooza – an 18 hour gaming fest that promotes Neumont’s very unique culture. 

“Neumont is the ideal school for those who are passionate about technology; we’re TechTopia! Our students aren’t really interested in the typical college social scene. They love the digital world, and when we have parties on campus they tend to revolve around all things tech.”  John Peppinger, Neumont’s Student Life Coordinator explained of the upcoming event.  “Plus, when we host events that revolve around gaming, computers, zombies, or Nerf – our students, and Utah’s local geek community come out to be a part of the fun – both analog and digital.”

Neumont University, offers accelerated Bachelor’s degrees with a focus on software, web, and game development as well as technology management.  Students enrolled in this intensive program attend classes five days per week, eight hours per day, for two and a half years and graduate into a growing field with hot career opportunities.  But, while on campus they also like to have a little fun … and at this school, which was dubbed by MSNBC as ‘Geek U’ in 2006, fun resolves around all things tech – gaming, social networks, computers, and more computers. And, the technology industry is taking note.

Neumont Project Showcase - September 2011

It's August and that means Fall Project Showcase is just around the corner, check out this video from our past Project Showcase to get a feel for the event. 

What is Project Showcase?

Neumont University is TechTopia, a haven for the technologically savvy — and Project Showcase, the Neumont student review, held each year in Spring and Fall is the perfect place to get a glimpse of what that really means. 

Project Showcase is an excellent chance to tour the campus, meet current students, and find out more about life and learning at Neumont University -- walk through rows of student projects completed in student's 1st - 10th quarters, you can even check out some of the Enterprise Projects that haven't yet been released to the public.  And of course, at the end of it all, there's a massive LAN party in our new Gaming Chamber.
