Occasionally, because people aren't familiar with Neumont's history of success, and recognition by the US Department of Education they'll ask, "Is Neumont University a Sham?" How can a student possibly earn a four year Bachelor's degree in just 2.5 years?
Quick answer, no Neumont isn't a sham, but we are unique! Neumont University started in 2003 and educates the digital elite through programs in computer science, game development, web development, and technology management. Neumont has graduated over 400 students who accept high paying careers in field quickly after graduation.
Of course, Neumont's programs are intense, which means that some students won't make it through. But, if you work hard and apply yourself, take advantage of the free tutoring services, and make attendance a priority, you should enjoy the same phenomenal results our graduates always have.
Some links about why Neumont University is NOT a Sham:

Neumont's been around for seven years, and has been recognized by basically ever major national media entity in the country for our unique curriculum, innovation in program delivery, and of course, our consistently amazing results.
ReplyDeleteI hope that anyone asking this question logs on to: http://www.neumont.edu/newsevents/news.html to see all the amazing things we're accomplishing. And then, checks out our student forums to chat with real students about their thoughts on Neumont: www.neumontforums.com.
Of course, because the program is challenging, their is the occasional student who comes to Neumont, doesn't do well academically and leaves disappointed and then goes online to post Neumont reviews saying that Neumont University is a sham. But, if you actually read any of those reviews it's clear the person never graduated from our University -- or else they would have learned how to write grammatically :) !
As a faculty member at Neumont University, I can tell you that what we do is no sham. We can produce a Bachelor's degree in 2.5 years because we expect a lot from our students: classes are 6-8 hours/day and we don't take summers off. It is intense and focused, but the effort is well worth it if it yields real technical competency and a high likelihood of employment. Anyone interested in a professional education in software development and engineering really should follow the links above and discover what we can do for you!
ReplyDeleteAt last! As long as you’re prepared to work hard and get your geek on for a few years, Neumont University is truly the best place to study computer science.
ReplyDeleteSham? Are you kidding us? I personally know several NU graduates that work in the software industry and they are very talented. I suppose it's like all things in life, we probably get what we deserve, based on our level of committment and passion. The real sham is people that fail and blame others for their own weakness. Cry babies never go far in life.
ReplyDeleteI have been employed at Neumont since 2004 and my role is to work with both faculty members and industry partners to ensure that our faculty are teaching the right things, and the right things effectively, so that our employer partners hire graduates with the skills they seek.
ReplyDeleteThe best way to evaluate Neumont is from the employer's eyes - after all, they're the ones who will ultimately determine whether our graduates are worth anything or not.
Employers absolutely love our graduates. That's indicated in the spectacular placement rates of our graduates (94+% historically and 100% in 2010) and the great starting compensation the graduates receive.
Even more telling is how many of our employers hire our grads in bulk, meaning they'll hire one or two and then just keep coming back for more because they recognize the talent of our graduates.
Do some real digging and contact the school for info. We can even connect you with employers who will tell you how great the program really is. Go Neumont!
You really aren't alone if you hear about Neumont and initially think "This is too good to be true, Neumont must be a sham." I thought that myself when I heard about it. But as I learned more, I just had to be part of the organization because of their revolutionary teaching methods.
ReplyDeleteI've now been teaching at Neumont for 4 years and I am still really excited about the program. In my opinion, Neumont graduates some of the best computer scientists you can find with an amazing mix of theoretical knowledge and practical experience.
Come check us out!
The value of a Neumont degree is determined by the people who hire its grads. Neumont grads are usually snatched up by employers before or shortly after the students graduate. That speaks for itself.
ReplyDeleteNeumont isn’t for everybody… but is just right for many. It’s good to “kick the tires” on any school under consideration—be it the University of or Neumont—and doing so at Neumont will show you that this is a great program.
It's strange that after all these years, and all Neumont's success anybody would still be asking if Neumont is a sham - it's a nationally respected University recognized by Utah's Governor, and the Executive VP of IBM, and other elite computer science programs.
ReplyDeleteBut, with such a small, unique community, I guess that is only to be expected.
I have now been graduated for about 2 years from Neumont I had an awesome experience! Other graduates and I have seen huge success since graduating and I credit it all to the dedicated professors who know how to work with you and prepare you for the rigorous demands of the business world.
ReplyDeleteMy employer now swears by Neumont graduates after hiring four of us. In the past we have hired and let go of many other developers with years more experience to hire hard working newly graduated Neumont students. How cool is that?
Because of the education I received at Neumont I am now in high demand. The terrific career services department helped me to get my name out there in the business world at the end of my education. I still don't know how some people have received my name but I still continue to receive calls from other employers and recruiters constantly. They often talk about how they haven't seen anyone with more experience using WPF.
Anyone who has the opportunity to get accepted and attend Neumont definitely should. We need more developers!
Hey Brett - thanks for sharing, it's the great stories like this that we want more people to hear. We're doing awesome stuff at Neumont, and we want all the doubters to know about it!

ReplyDeleteI've worked at Neumont for almost 4 years now and it is definitely not a sham. I've seen plenty of students come in, study their butts off and at the end of the schooling here get killer careers in computer science making great money. It's that what its all about? I wish the school I went to had a career services department that actually cared about getting their graduates employed like Neumont does.
ReplyDeleteThe other great thing about Neumont is all the students here are like minded (aka computer geeks, which is awesome because geeks rule!)
Legit! Neumont University is seriously the best place for a legitimate education in Computer Science. You get to go to school in a small classroom setting and do real, project work.

ReplyDeleteNeumont University continues to surprise and impress with top quality graduates.
First of all.... I asked those same questions. Is this a sham? is it even a real school? do they really have such high employment rates after school?
ReplyDeleteThats because if your not from utah, the school is never aired or talked about anywhere. No tv has news on it, no adds show up or anything. In fact, for me at least, i ONLY heard of this school because a schoolership site put it under my recommendations. I asked for info and i got a book in the mail. Untill that day, i'd never heard of it. Not once....
Thats how people think it's a sham. They've NEVER heard of it till something pointed them to this new school. When they read the info, it becomes a "this is too good to be true" type of thing. You know, "wheres the catch" type of thing.
Now for the good news. I can testify that it's not a "sham" and is a real school. Why? Because i took a chance and am now attending it.
Now for the part i must say I'm disappointed in on these comments.
"or else they would have learned how to write grammatically :) ! "
"The real sham is people that fail and blame others for their own weakness. Cry babies never go far in life. "
ummm. thought this blog was about the school and it being a sham or not. Putting people down on this blog will in no way gain respect for the school.
Also, just because the school is know here doesn't mean it's known everywhere, so simply telling someone to go to a site uve told them to go to isnt going to convince them its not a sham.
Finally, (and i know my grammer isnt correct on this post (and i do attend the school)) this school preaches how it accepts people and how it cares. So why then am i seeing people on here bashing others opinions, even if they are neg.? Thought the school was accepting? Am i wrong about that? yes, some may post neg. things about the school, but do they not have the right to post how they feel? To bash them or attack them for it in no way makes this school look better. Personally it makes me wounder if the school, as one review i found says, "really does what it preaches".
This post is about the school being a sham. It's clearly not a sham, so instead of attacking others, why don't we stick to providing the facts and respecting everyones views, after all, this is a school isn't it? one that wants to gain perspective students, not loose them to post bashing others.
Bottom line - Not a "sham" and if you're like me and never heard of the school, research it and look up it's info. Don't base your opinion on others, check out the school or ask for info about it, then decide if it's for you. you can even look up the news casts people talk about online to see what the news says about the school.
I've worked at Neumont University for around 5 years with the school's I.T. group. In our position, we get to work with both the faculty and the students frequently. I am always impressed by the faculty's dedication to helping the students master the concepts presented in class, then create projects that reflect the skills they have learned.
ReplyDeleteAnyone that knows they want a Computer Science degree, and has the drive to handle an accelerated program should consider Neumont University.
The reason I love Neumont University is the practical nature of our program. We don't spend a ton of time on theoretical stuff that programmers never use. We focus on the real technologies that software developers need to know. That's not to say that we don't have a theoretical foundation, but it's the foundation that is needed by professionals, not academics in their ivory towers.
ReplyDeleteAs the Vice President of Internal Affairs for the Unified Student Government for Neumont University, I would like to say we're becoming the most progressive, fast-paced, expansive University in the country. We may be small, but we're a power house of talent and enthusiasm.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting to see that those who are posting negative things about NU being a sham are the same students who were kicked out due to their lack of good grades. What about the multitude of very successful graduates who would disagree? Their reviews carry water in my book! IMO this place is AWESOME! Come and see for yourself.
ReplyDeletePersonally I've seen many graduates go on to do some amazing things both work wise and money wise. I would hardly call it a sham!!! It's tough and rigorous, but the pay-off is worht it!!
ReplyDeleteNeumont is a 2.5 year Bachelors program. It's a hard school. That being said, I wouldn't choose any other place to be. It's hard but it's well worth the struggl
ReplyDeleteNeumont is a small school. This provides it with many advantages that otherwise you couldn't find. One of my favorite things about Neumont is the fact that after a year or so here you'll know almost every full time teacher Neumont employs.
I'm currently the President of one of the largest student body groups at Neumont. The order I run, Beyond the Screen, is a group dedicated to getting people away from video games. One of the things we like to do is hold free events for all students and prospective students.
Is Neumont University a sham? The answer is no.
ReplyDeleteAs a current staff member and an experienced higher education professional who has worked with all kinds of 'traditional' four-year higher education institutions – from flagship state universities to private liberal arts colleges to focused professional schools – I can categorically state that Neumont University in no way offers a lower quality, less rigorous, or less focused education than any of these institutions. In fact, with the exception of a small group of high-prestige institutions, it’s fair to say that it demands more of its students AND, in turn, delivers more for them.
The only reason anybody asks this question is because we are different.
We consciously designed our education to be different. We take a traditional 4-year degree and compress it into 2.5-3.0 years with longer days in class and no summer breaks. We believe in minimizing theory and maximizing exposure to projects with real employers – mimicking the way people in the tech industry actually work. A Neumont education is hard work, and it isn’t for everybody, but it’s definitely right for those who are tech-obsessed, curious and eager to succeed.
Most importantly, a Neumont education delivers enviable results (which is why we get the ‘is it for real’ question). See for yourself at http://www.neumont.edu/results.
So, is Neumont different? Absolutely, and proudly so. Is it a sham? Absolutely not.
